In short, it’s a way to outfit your classroom with the supplies you need through crowdsourcing. Intrepid teachers can fund their music programs by joining DonorsChoose.org for FREE. They are a non-profit with the sole concern of funding your classroom. Teachers are able to post a project (starting with a maximum of $800) and pre-select how the money will be spent through the vast array of retailers and educational providers connected through their website. People are able to browse these projects by location, subject or theme and then decide how much they would like to donate.
If the project requires $800 in donations, the donors have the option to donate any amount of money towards it. When enough donors have funded the project, the teacher is notified, the items are ordered and then the stewarding begins.
Teachers must thank each donor, typically through letters and student written thank you’s. This is wonderful because each and every donor receives one, acknowledging their support. And if the teacher completes this process in a timely fashion, they can then start another project to fund with a higher maximum total. Music teachers can purchase instruments, supplies, classroom materials and books.
